What is Startup Guide?
We’re a publishing and media company that helps entrepreneurs navigate and connect with different startup scenes across the world. We produce guidebooks and online content to in an effort to guide, empower and inspire people to start their own businesses, no matter where they are.
When Sissel Hansen founded Startup Guide in 2014, we started with the crazy idea of creating a print business in the startup world. Many said it couldn’t be done, but today we have books in over 25 cities in Europe, the Middle East and the United States, including Berlin, Lisbon, London, Tel Aviv and New York City. There are several more currently in the pipeline, including our first books in Asia and Africa. Additionally, we recently launched startupguide.com, a website aiming to explore different types of content and reach a wider audience.
Our offices in Berlin and Lisbon double as physical stores showcasing our books, as well as indie magazines and gadgets produced by startups. We are about to open our third office/store in Copenhagen.
Exciting! And what exactly are you looking for?
Well, in the last two years we have grown from two people to 20 (plus numerous freelancers working on each book) and as the company has grown, so has our ambition to explore startup ecosystems in new corners of the globe. We’re looking for someone who believes in our company’s mission, has a passion for sales and isn’t afraid to take on responsibility.
Ideally, you can offer some (if not all) of these skills:
- Degree/experience in sales and/or business development
- Excellent presentation skills
- Strong interest in startups and entrepreneurship
- Impeccable written, interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Scrutinous attention-to-detail and organization skills
- Self-driven personality with the capacity to work independently
- Current residence in/ability to move to Berlin
Our expectation is that you’d work 40 hours a week for six months, with the possibility of receiving a full-time contract at the conclusion of the internship. We ultimately hire most of our interns, so if you prove yourself, there’s a real chance of being brought on full-time.
Don’t tick all the boxes? Don’t worry! This is an internship, after all, and it’s not just about having the hard skills needed to get the job done. What is most important to us is that you’re driven, eager to learn and unafraid to pitch your own ideas to your peers.
So what does the job entail?
To start, you’ll be heavily involved in pitching our books to potential community partners in cities across the globe, alongside the rest of our business development team. This entails researching up-and-coming startup ecosystems, building relationships with local players and expressing the value of our guidebooks.
You’ll be working closely with Marlene, our business development lead, who is a rockstar in her own right. You’ll be expected to prepare detailed presentations for clients, pursue deals for new books and develop strategies for expanding our global reach.
Here are a few of the other things we’ll count on you to do:
- Expand our customer base
- Research and identify promising leads
- Maintain and grow target account lists
- Participate in outreach via phone, email and social channels
- Draft tailored presentations and proposals
We are a fast-company growing, which means our job descriptions frequently change and a lot needs to be figured out on the fly. We expect you to conduct research and solve problems independently, but you are always welcome to ask for advice or feedback from the team.

You get to be a part of a young, international team comprised of talented designers, brand-builders, writers and editors, at a lively office in the heart of Kreuzberg. You’ll be paid €500 per month through Upwork, and also be a part of our quarterly company retreats. It’s our goal to further your personal development in a collaborative work environment, in which you can take on a broad scope of responsibilities and propose solutions.
