Market Analyst/Customer and Market Insights (CMI) Associate

Objective of the Role

The Market Analyst searches and analyses external data on ResearchGate’s (RG) customers and markets and turns them into actionable insight.

Key Responsibilities

Area of Accountability

  • Develop and refine a quantitative model of RG’s addressable markets incl. relevant segments (such as verticals, tiers, geographies etc..) and significant institutions
  • Support the strategy development process (supply relevant external and internal data)
  • Create vertical knowledge, especially in the life sciences market, to provide sales teams with the market insight required for advanced consultative selling
  • Support the Director Sales & Marketing with ad hoc analyses


Strategy and Markets

  • Collect and aggregate market data from different sources (databases, market reports) to quantify markets and segments
  • Identify key players in identified sectors and compile information regarding their strategies and trends
  • Conduct research on specific markets, industries and companies / institutions and their commercial opportunity
  • Analyse competitors and their strategies
  • Analyse and visualise data for strategic plans and initiatives
  • Work with Product and Marketing teams to share data and information

Vertical & Customer Insights

  • Collect customer specific data from various data sources (analyst and financial reports, company websites, industry associations etc.) and understand their strategies and concerns
  • Identify and articulate key industry trends and drivers
  • Map out the marketing and distribution strategies of major market participants
  • Generate new insight from polls, surveys and focus groups
  • Combine external and internal data to create benchmark performance reports and insight that is highly valuable for clients

Deliverables (KPIs)


  • Quantitative addressable market sizing framework for Scientific
  • Advertising with detailed segmentation based on multiple dimensions
  • Create a central depository for all relevant industry statistics and information of key customers
  • Turn market insight into sales collateral, training and other material
  • Campaign performance benchmark reports

Business Impact

  • Contribute to winning big budgets from top accounts with data driven sales pitches
  • Differentiated commercial strategies based on thorough understanding of the markets and its drivers lead to above market (Online advertising, recruiting) growth and profitability


Qualifications & Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree with strong academic record (a plus if from mathematics, computer science, or another analytical field), Master’s optional
  • Certification or advanced practical skill in using analytical methods and tools
  • Expert user of Excel and PowerPoint. Statistical/BI software, SQL, Python a plus
  • Basic project management


  • At least 3 years of professional experience in either an analytical or sales / marketing role (preferred if at least one role/company held for 1.5 years or longer)
  • Either Online advertising/media or life science or other research discipline experience a plus


  • An affinity for data, and a resourcefulness in obtaining data when clean/complete information is not readily available
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to transform data into actionable insight
  • Self-driven and results focused with attention to detail
  • Curious and willing to challenge the status quo
  • Ability to build relationships and interpersonal skills to interact with and influence various stakeholders
