Director of Research

Startup Genome is looking for a Director of Research, to lead our global research team and work with renowned thought leaders on the world’s most comprehensive data and research on the global technology startup economy. We produce research on technology startups that influence the policy of our government customers in over 30 countries and growing, and publish the world’s most popular report on Tech startup ecosystems. Last year, several million people and tech leaders saw the results of our research through our report and more than 1000 media articles quoting our work, including the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, The New York Times, etc.


  • Build and manage the global research team, being the main leader in research initiatives like the Global Startup Ecosystem Report (quoted in over 1000 media articles), and regional ecosystem reports
  • Working hands-on to build and structure Startup Genome‘s analyses, collaborating with global thought leaders in government, academia, and consulting to shape the upcoming reports
  • Create content for and publish insights via channels such as reports, articles, blogs, conferences, presentations, and other opportunities
  • Be on top of developments in research, data, and trends that affect startup ecosystems and innovation-focused economic development
  • Establish new research projects with our global policymaker members, raising funds for it collectively with academic partners and our internal team
  • Support survey design, implementation and monitoring for our work
  • Develop and support the culture and processes that guarantee top quality in our data, metrics and insights


  • Strong analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to use bold ideas to engage and influence high-level decision makers in the public and private sectors
  • Prior work experience in think tank, academia, research institution (including consulting) and/or public sector
  • Comfort presenting complex issues to internal and external audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complicated business, economic, and policy issues
  • Experience managing a team of researchers and research projects
  • Desire to be a part of a globally leading and path-breaking research team, both managing team and being hands-on
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Writing experience a requirement – can be within the fields of market research, equity research, vertical journalism, or consulting in tech-related area
  • 5+ years leading research projects and a research pipeline, with success making insights actionable, interesting, and high-quality, producing scalable results
  • BA/BS required; relevant graduate degrees a plus
  • Extensive experience using Excel. Experience in R, SQL, and/or Python data analysis frameworks is a plus


  • Experience with developing and implementing surveys
  • Experience with either (and ideally both) tech startups and research organizations
  • Experience with data visualization tools
